‘Uganda army has not, and will not deploy in Kenya’

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has refuted media reports that they are on standby to support security operations in Kenya.

“The UPDF wishes to totally denounce these allegations which are totally false, alarmist and misleading,” said Brig. Richard Karemire in a UPDF and Defence Ministry statement on Sunday.

“The Kenyan people have spoken about their choice of government through their recently concluded elections. The Uganda government and indeed the UPDF has neither received such a request on deployment nor is there a situation that warrants it.”

At least 16 people have died in elections related protests in Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s strongholds, according to an AFP tally, many shot dead by police.

Odinga is disputing the results that were declared Friday with Uhuru Kenyatta re-eelcted. He has urged his supporters to stay home from work Monday to mourn those killed in protests over what he claims was a rigged election, while he mulls his next move.
