Montevideo, Uruguay | XINHUA | Uruguayan national soccer team captain, Diego Godin, said on Wednesday, ahead of their match against Chile in the FIFA World Cup qualification for Qatar 2022, that the Chilean national team is “strong” and is in a process of renovation.
“Chile is a team that in recent years has been very consistent, it is a winning team, with big figures,” said Godin who plays for Italian Club Cagliari.
As to the World Cup qualifiers taking place in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Godin said that “it is a different situation, but one with the desire, the dream, and the mentality that is the beginning of the qualifying rounds.”
Regarding the notable absences of some players from both teams, Godin added that “we are not going to hide that we have very important absences who are benchmarks for the national team, but we have a lot of new teammates who are coming with freshness, desire, enthusiasm.”
The team, led by manager Oscar Tabarez, held its third training session on Wednesday afternoon at the Uruguay Celeste Complex, with a full roster of 23 players.
Star forward Luis Suarez, who plays for Atletico Madrid and only arrived in Montevideo from Spain on Monday night, was one of the last players to report for training.
Uruguay will host Chile on Thursday and then go on to play in Ecuador on October 13.
