US EMBASSY: Apologize for what?

Popp

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The United States Embassy in Uganda is yet to receive any formal request to apologize to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as demanded by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defense Forces. In a tweet last week, Muhoozi said the country was about to see a confrontation between the government and the US Ambassador William Popp.

In another tweet, Muhoozi asked Ambassador Popp to apologize for what he called disrespecting Uganda and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Muhoozi never disclosed how Popp was disrespectful.

“I haven’t forgotten about the US Ambassador. He will leave on Monday if he doesn’t personally apologize to Mzee,” Muhoozi said in a tweet on Friday. Muhoozi’s outburst came less than 24 hours after the US government sanctioned four police officers for allegedly violating human rights.

On Monday, several X pages linked to Muhoozi claimed that Popp had delivered his apology to President Museveni hence forestalling his departure from the country as Muhoozi had warned. However, writing on their X page, the US Embassy in Kampala has described as false any claims that Popp has fulfilled the demand of Muhoozi.

“This narrative is completely false. Neither the U.S. Embassy nor #AmbPopp has received any formal request to apologize from the Ugandan government on any matter, nor has he apologized. All official statements are posted on our platforms,” the short message said.

Muhoozi using X has made comments that have rattled not only people in Kampala but also the region and beyond. He has tweeted celebrating Russia’s attack on Ukraine, he has warned about militarily taking Kenya’s Nairobi and has weighed in on the struggle between Ethiopia and Egypt over the Nile waters.
