Use oil law, policies to benchmark other sectors – Malango

Rosa Malango addressing the 4th Annual Oil & Gas Convention 2018 that took place at Kampala Serena Hotel

Kampala, Uganda |THE INDEPENDENT | The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Uganda, Rosa Malango has said the relatively effective laws, policies and regulations governing the oil and gas sector should be replicated to streamline other sectors in the country.

Addressing the 4th Oil and Gas Convention in Kampala on Thursday, Malango said the way the development of the oil and gas sector has been managed should act as a benchmark for other development aspects of the country, including development minerals.

Malango said building on the best practices so far exhibited, it is also crucial that the revenues from oil are used for the benefit of all Ugandans and not just a few privileged people.

She also stressed that development of oil should not be at the expense of the environment and other productive sectors if inclusive, sustainable and transformative development is to be achieved.

Although Uganda discovered oil in 2006, the government has been very cautious in opening up the sector until the requisite laws, policies, regulations and agencies are in place.

Amelia Kyambadde, the Minister of Trade, said efforts are being made to ensure that the oil and gas sector facilitates national and regional trade and investments.
