THIS WEEK: Court warns police over Kaweesi murder suspects
Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The 23 suspects in police custody over the murder of former Police spokesperson Felix Kaweesi could be freed if police does not speed up investigations, Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court warned the office of the DPP. Grade One Magistrate Noah Sajjabi directed the police through the DPP to conclude investigations in less than a month or else he will be forced to release the suspects.
The magistrate issued the warning after State Attorney Carol Apiya told court that inquiries were still going on. The suspects have been on remand for five months and the law stipulates that investigations into capital offences should be done by the state within six months to have the suspects sent to the High Court for trial.
The magistrates remanded the suspects until Oct 10. Kaweesi, his bodyguard and driver were gunned down on March 17 just a few metres outside the former police spokesman’s home.
