THIS WEEK: EU to invest Shs420bn in SME’s

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The European Union plans to invest over Shs 420 billion in small and medium enterprises that are environmentally friendly in the coming few years, according to the Union’s head of cooperation in Uganda, Cedric Merel.

Merel, who was speaking during the SEED East Africa symposium at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel, said the initiative aims to boost an inclusive green economy through creation of descent jobs for youth and women to reduce income inequality and poverty.

“We are still identifying specific areas where to invest this money,” he said, adding that the support comes at the time SME’s finds it difficult to access to finance.

During the SEED East Africa symposium, six businesses from Uganda and Kenya were recognised for being outstanding in the eco-inclusive enterprise development in the region.
