THIS WEEK: Kenyatta warns rivals on use of courts to delay elections
As Aug.08 when Kenya goes to the polls fast approaches, presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta who is vying for a second term of office has expressed reservations on the judiciary. Speaking during a rally in western Kenya, Kenyatta who said the judiciary is taking them for ‘fools’ warned the opposition not to use court to delay the election process citing an earlier win where the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)’s objection of the opposition’s case was dismissed by court.
However Kenyatta’s warning wasn’t taken lightly by chief justice David Maraga who on July 09 issued a statement that the president’s utterances have a potential of impairing public confidence in courts and therefore can’t be tolerated.
Kenyatta faces long term rival Raila Odinga, the head of the National Super Alliance (NASA) party.
