THIS WEEK: New report faults automatic promotion, UPE
A report on performance of Universal Primary Education (UPE) released by a think-tank Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment (ACODE) has faulted the Ministry of Education for the automatic promotion policy. Speaking at the launch of the report on Aug04, Dr. Susan Kavuma one of the researchers said the policy of just promoting a pupil to the next class without evaluating what they have mastered at that level defeats the purpose of education. With this policy, education experts say pupils don’t concentrate to learn because they are assured of going to the next class.
The report also noted that government is failing to come up with a clear policy on feeding pupils something that is causing many to dropout and in the end failing to achieve the goal of UPE which seeks to create access to education for all.
