THIS WEEK: Former Kampala mayor Ssebaana hailed as an enterprising Ugandan

John Ssebaana Kizito, the former mayor for Kampala city and former Democratic Party (DP) president has been praised as an enterprising Ugandan who contributed immensely to the growth of the local insurance industry.

Ssebaana was the founder of Statewide Insurance Company (SWICO), the first Ugandan-owned insurance firm. He had been hospitalized at Nakasero Hospital after suffering from a stroke two weeks ago until he passed away on July 3 at 83. Ssebaana was also a leading property owner in Kampala with several buildings under his name.

He was a longtime politician serving as DP president from 2005-2010, including running as its presidential flag-bearer in the 2006 general elections. With a political career spanning 50 years, Ssebaana served in the Idi Amin and Milton Obote regimes in various roles including such as EALA MP, Kampala South MP. He was also a Constituent Assembly delegate and a Minister for Cooperatives and Marketing in the first years of the Museveni government.
