THIS WEEK: Uganda declared bird flu free
Kampala, Uganda | THIS WEEK | Following a January outbreak of bird flu in parts of Wakiso and Masaka districts, neighboring countries including Kenya and Tanzania issued a trade ban on poultry products from the country until they are declared disease free.
On Aug.19, after months of surveillance the minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Christopher Kibazanga declared the country free.
Kibazanga who said they are in negotiations with neighbors to lift the ban added that all samples collected since March from both domestic and wild birds have been confirmed negative.
He explains, “The government of Kenya has now agreed to partially lift the trade ban through compartments. Some firms and industries have been certified and licensed to export to Kenya after fulfilling the conditions”.
The Ministry reports an estimated 50,000 domestic birds and 10,000 wild birds were lost due to bird flu.
