Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | President Museveni appointed veteran Politician, Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga, as the new Chancellor of Makerere University. Kiyonga replaces Dr. Ezra Suruma whose term in office ended.
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University confirmed the appointment through his social media X space message.
“Excellency the President of Uganda has appointed Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as the new Chancellor of Makerere University. On behalf of Makerere University Council, I extend our warm congratulations to Dr. Kiyonga on this prestigious appointment and warmly welcome him to the service of Makerere University,” said Nawangwe.
Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga has served as Minister under President Museveni in several portfolios right from 1996. He served as the Minister of Defence for ten years before he was posted as Uganda’s Ambassador to China.
Kiyonga served for six years as the Minister of Finance under President Museveni.He played a crucial role in the privatization and liberalization of the economy. He was also the Minister of Internal Affairs for two years in the mid-nineties.
He was the Minister of Health for five years. At the international level, he is credited to have laid the foundation for the operationalization of the Global Trust Fund for HIV/AIDS and Health.
Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga also served as the national Political Commissar of the National Resistance Movement before Uganda returned to the multiparty system.
He was a Member of Parliament and a member of the Constituent Assembly. He has also served as a consultant at the World Bank.
