Soroti University, Uganda’s 9th Public University was scheduled to open in August this year. However, it has come to our attention that the University is behind schedule on most of the requirements for this to happen. Among other issues, are the unfinished facilities none of which has received a certificate of occupancy.
We’ve also learned that the University is yet to recruit staff. No lecturers, not even labaratory attendants have been recruited by the University despite the fact that the first intake is scheduled for July 2016. The University’s programmes have not been accreddited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).
Thus, Teso Region may have to wait a little longer for the first University in the region. In 2013, the Government charged the Soroti University Task Force to build a science based University with a focus on the disciplines of Medicine and Engineering. On 16th July 2015, the University was approved by Parliament of Uganda and was gazetted on 16th July 2015 under statutory instrument 2015 No.34. However, it’s now clear that all this is still work in progress.
Despite outgoing Minister of Education, Jessica Alupo’s assurance, the University won’t meet its timeline.
